About this exercise

You see a trend described in plain English (for example, how steep or gentle the change is). Your job is to pick the most natural IELTS Task 1 phrase — the wording you would use in a short report about a chart, graph, or table.

In Task 1, examiners reward precise trend vocabulary: the right verb–adverb pairs show you can read the shape of the data (a spike, a slow climb, a plateau, irregular movement). Weak or mismatched phrases sound vague or even misdescribe the picture — which hurts both Task Achievement and Lexical Resource. These drills build automatic collocations so you can describe trends accurately under time pressure.
